908297_light_2Are you a Christian? I know that this question is quite simple, but sometimes I wonder. You see, even the simple questions can be the most complicated when you stop and think about them.

Are you a Christian when you speed up to run through a yellow light? Are you a Christian when you tell a little white lie to avoid confrontation or awkwardness? Are you a Christian when you are faced with some of the worst temptations and you fail miserably in front of the eyes of God?

Many of us have been confused about this due to what seems to be conflicting Bible verses.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” —Romans 3:23

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” —John 3:16 (NIV)

And finally…

“For the wages of sin is death.” —Romans 6:23

I bet you have all heard that last one before; I know I have. But I believe that this verse is often used out of context. When Paul wrote this, he was talking about the differences between being a slave to sin and being a slave to God. In the verse before Romans 6:23 he writes…

“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.” Romans 6:22

Well there is the answer to our little question. When you become a slave to God, you will be lead to holiness and then eternal life. You see, to willingly become a slave to someone, you want to seek them, follow them, need them; and even be like them.

So, are you a Christian?
The bible makes it clear that yes, God forgives us for our sin. But in calling ourselves Christians, we need to take a close look at ourselves and ask…Do I want God?

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
