Finding God on Prime Time

I have to admit, I am the biggest cynic when it comes to Christian movies or dramatic shows, I usually judge them on their on own scale, I find myself saying, it was great, for a Christian Movie, or it was a great message, but I wonder how many non-Christians are reached thru the film. Now to be fair, I don’t know that I could do better, but aren’t we all a bit of a film critic when we put a cup of Starbucks in our hand?
What I do search for, and am always ecstatic when I find is God in films and shows that don’t advertise it. I love it when some Hollywood writer sneaks in scripture, a moral tale or as I am finding more and more often, they create a believable Christian character. Let’s face it, if they made most books of the Bible into a film it would be “R” rated. God used real, raw people, not snow white blameless characters who have all the answers. One of my favorite TV shows is Bones; it’s brilliant, witty and just entertaining to watch. If you don’t watch, Bones is a crime drama on Fox. I just wanted to share a closing line from one of the recent shows that affected me; “…God is not just a god of anger and vengeance. My religious beliefs tell me that Christ did not die in vain. That he died to redeem us all. And I intend to show that this good simple man also did not die in vain. That he redeemed one angry, shouting man. So these are the last word I will ever broadcast. I hope that they’re the words you remember best. Peace on Earth.” Bones Season 5, Episode 10, “The Goop on the Girl”

Great article, a good example of this in movies is that I was pleasently surprised on the message from the movie "evan almightly" from 2007- an oldie but a goodie-entertaing with a good underlying theme based on the biblical story of Noah and the ark- about having faith to do what we are called to do by God.
